As You Like It

Recently read: As You Like It by William Shakespeare.

As You Like It is my favorite Shakespeare play. I love the characters of Rosalind and Celia. The role is disguises and their influence on gender in this play has always been my primary interest.

This time around, I was intrigued by the role of nature in the play. Ecocritics probably have a lot to say that I would be very interested in reading.

Little Brother

Recently read: Little Brother by Cory Doctorow.

My favorite Boing Boing editor’s first young adult book is one of the best novels I have read this year. In short: a group of teenagers are captured and harassed by the government after a terrorist attack. When one of their friends ends up in a Guantanamo style prison camp, they decide to fight back using the Internet, Linux, and other super geeky tools. The plot is good here, but the coolest part is that the way Doctorow writes Little Brother it can be used as a manual for securing your privacy and other growing concerns. Reading a popular book with pages and pages of Linux references was one of the highlights of my year.

Read via Daily Lit. I applaud Doctorow for releasing his novels via a Creative Commons license.

The Divine Comedy

Recently read: The Divine Comedy by Dante.

I decided to reread Dante this summer because I was curious about some of the intertextual metaphors I could harvest from for my own writing. Dante is great, obviously, but this time I was particularly focusing on Beatrice.

A beautiful book I first read in high school. Chopin’s has a lovely writing style. I read this over the summer via Daily Lit.

You know what…this isn’t one of my favorite Shakespeare plays. I enjoy it, but it isn’t in my top 10 for sure. I did enjoy, as a child, the hip hop adaptation the local high school did of it. Other people have said plenty about this play and, honestly, I don’t have a lot more to add.

Hamlet

Recently read: Hamlet by William Shakespeare.

I really like this annotated edition of Hamlet. I picked it up about five years ago while taking a course on Shakespeare as an undergraduate. It was nice to carry this around for a week instead of the mammoth Riverside edition.

Taming Of The Shrew

Recently read: Taming Of The Shrew by William Shakespeare.

This is one of my least favorite Shakespeare plays. Besides the misogynistic ending it is just not that interesting. I’d be curious about current criticism, however, to see what scholars are doing with it right now.
