Dave over at Hardware Media & Radio is reporting that Mikey Donaldson, who is first and foremost known as the bass player for the Texas hardcore band The Offenders has passed away. I’ve never been a huge fan of The Offenders, I love their track on the P.E.A.C.E. compilation, but Mikey also played on two essential Texas hardcore records: D.R.I.’s Dealing With It LP and M.D.C.’s Millions Of Dead Cops LP. I remember hearing about The Offenders playing a reunion in 2003. Friends down that way had good things to say about it. Mikey will be missed: he had been touring with M.D.C. again in recent years. I can’t remember if he was playing with them when I saw them earlier in the decade.
Good Bad Music For Bad, Bad, Times also offers some thoughts.
I have been very saddened lately by the deaths of members of two of the best hardcore bands Japan has ever offered. Kawakami, the guitarist and singer of Disclose passed away a few months ago. Now, in the past few days, comes word that Chelsea, the guitarist of bands like Death Side and, more recently, Paintbox has also died. All three of these bands are legendary and highly recommended for anyone interested in hardcore.
There is a great lack of coverage of both deaths in the underground community. A Google search for both leads to some forums but not much else. This is rather sad and says a lot about forums and websites devoted to hardcore, who seem to spend most of their time on masturbatory press releases and promoting asinine limited edition vinyl. Daniel over at Dead Metaphor really nails it, focusing on the useless site punknews.org:
By the way, as a tangential end-note to this post, I’ve been waiting for days to see news of Chelsea’s death on punknews.org, but they still haven’t posted a story. This supposedly punk site reports on the new Foo Fighters album and notes every move of every shitty emo band out there, but they remain oblivious to the passing of one of punk’s greatest musical forces. It’s not that I expect that site to be the punkest thing on the planet, but it makes me wonder why I still read it.
This is a cool picture of Raybeez, the singer of the New York hardcore band Warzone. Ray died in 1997. This picture was used as the back cover of the next fanzine I did as a tribute. It was taken by Christina Garcia.
I can’t believe Ray has been dead almost ten years. In 1996 I was going to interview him for the fanzine I was doing at the time. We spoke a few times on the phone, and even after the interview fell through (long story) he still called once more to check in and see how I was doing. We last spoke a few months before he died at a show here in New Jersey.
Ray’s passing was also one of the first things I remember seeing break online. I woke up that morning and checked the newsgroup to find out about it. I figured it was some asshole playing a joke, but when I got to campus a few hours later a few of my friends were able to confirm it pretty much.
I know I just did this recently, but again I must talk about the death of one of my favorite authors. Much like Arthur Miller, Hunter S. Thompson came into my life while I was in high school. I read Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas and became fascinated by the writing. Thompson’s take no prisoners attitude still inspires me today. The worst part of the loss of him is a man like him is perfect for dealing with our current administration. Thompson’s obituary of Richard Nixon is so dead on and I can only imagine what he would be writing about our current, even worse than Nixon’s, administration; especially based on this quote from the Salon interview linked below
“Who does vote for these dishonest shitheads?” - referring to the people currently occupying the White House. “They are the racists and hate mongers among us — they are the Ku Klux Klan. I piss down the throats of these Nazis.”
