Lara Croft and The Tomb Raider Phenomenon

Now I am reading Lara’s Book: Lara Croft and The Tomb Raider Phenomenon by Douglas Coupland. This book has been on my Amazon wishlist since approx 1999 so I thought I’d finally pick it up.

& I

According to Wired, in his new book Douglas Coupland has created a character named “Douglas Coupland.” This character is based on internet rumors about himself which include meteorite collecting. I like the idea of a “meta Doug” as he puts it being out there. A second, invented, personification of ourself is an interesting writing tool for fiction I think.

However, don’t we already do that everyday? Isn’t the William who posts on this blog a “meta William?” How much of me is created for this blog, or for other people? How much of me am I really at anytime? I hope I don’t exude a Meta William who is a cynical attempt at a public persona, or what I think my public persona should be.

Hopefully Meta William and I have a relationship similar to Borges & I.

Slate also recently reviewed J-Pod.

Cory over a Boing Boing also wrote a rather nice post about his enjoyment of J-Pod.

I finished reading Generation X today. Turns out, I did read it before. Claire, astronauts, and whatnot.

Homeric Hymns

The first book I read this year was The Homeric Hymns. Of course, all of these are very important; however, I am most interested in the story of Persephone, which is translated beautifully here.

Next up for me is Generation X by Douglas Coupland. Somehow, despite having read all of Coupland’s other books, I have not read this one. Maybe I did in my teens, but I can’t remember.
