The Gospel According To Mark

My favorite story in Brodie’s Report is The Gospel According To Mark. Originally published in The New Yorker, you can hear Paul Theroux read and discuss it on one of their recent podcasts.

Banshee 1.4

With the release a few months ago of 1.4, I think it is safe to say that Banshee has become my favorite music player. Banshee is a jukebox (like ITunes) style player which allows users to organize their music however they wish (I prefer by band). I have become really interested in smart playlists and used them to organize my unlistened podcasts in a clear and sufficient manner.

The biggest step forward in 1.4, however, is the ability to refresh your music library manually. When I remove already listened to podcasts or update tags I want to be able to quickly refresh my library. Banshee allows the user to do just that now.

Mechanisms

A book I have added to my summer “to read” list is Matthew Kirschenbaum’s Mechanisms: New Media and the Forensic Imagination. As Dr. Kirschenbaum reports on his blog, he was interviewed in January for MIT Press’s monthly podcast. I will check this podcast out tomorrow during my commute.

How cool is this: Mechanisms also has its own blog now! I am proud to link to Dr. Kirschenbaum’s work; not only am I big fan of it, his definition of Electronic Literature is the one I am using for my MA thesis and the one Toni and I are working with for our symposium presentation next month (Oh my! A Month from tomorrow!)

MSNBC Podcasts

I am very disappointed with MSNBC’s podcasts. I would like to listen to a podcast of Keith Olbermann’s nightly Countdown show, but MSNBC only offers a small portion, about a quarter, of each episode for download. If MSNBC isn’t going to offer the entire episode, what’s the point of even bothering! I already missed the show when it aired, wouldn’t it make sense to allow viewers to download the entire episode to catch up? I would be willing to sit through an ad or two, like I do when I listen to podcasts from ESPN, to get the entire episode each night. I like what I hear from Countdown, but if I am not going to get the entire episode from their feed, I will never be moved to actually check the show out.

NPR Jazz Profiles

I am not a huge fan of NPR, but I am enjoying their newish Jazz Profiles series. Over the weekend I listened to the two podcasts about Miles Davis. The first is called Miles’ Styles and is more of an overview of his career. The other focuses on his album Kind Of Blue.

Checking these podcasts out also led me to two other features on Davis that NPR has done which focuses on two of my favorite albums: Sketches Of Spain and In A Silent Way.

Ian Mackaye On Dissonance

One of the best podcasts I have heard lately is Dissonance out of Washington D.C.. Recently they interviewed Ian Mackaye of Dischord Records. The interview is really well done and Ian plays some great music also.
