Weekly Reader

I am saddened, even more than I figured I would be, by the passing of Majel Barrett-Roddenberry.  Star Trek was my first love as a kid and her involvement with it has always been such a cherished part of the franchise.  I have a love-hate relationship with her role as Deanna Troi’s mother, but her roles in the original series and as the computer voice in the newer series will never be forgotten.  Wil Wheaton has some brief thoughts and Metafilter has a nice tribute as well.  I’m sure my pal Sean will have something to say soon.

You might have noticed I redesigned this site a few days back. I am really happy with the changes I made and hope you are too. Blogging should return to normal as of today. Oh, I will be going through, little by little, and doing some tinkering with my tags to add tags for individual books, etc to more fully branch out this weblog.

  • Two links on David Foster Wallace: One of my professors as an undergraduate, Scott Rettberg, reflects on, one of his professors, Wallace.  Rolling Stone has a piece on him as well.
  • My friend Tony Rettman recently interviewed Joe Carducci, former SST Records employee and author of The Rock & Pop Narcotic and, more recently, Enter Naomi.
  • More music: In These Times recently interviewed Ian Mackaye.  I missed his recent speaking date here in New Jersey; I believe my friends over at Double Cross are going to post video of it soon.

Before Dishonor

A few months ago I blogged about Peter David’s new Star Trek The Next Generation novel, Before Dishonor. Back in March, thanks to Voyages Of Imagination, readers could view the confusing cover picture, which clearly states it is a TNG novel, but also clearly has Seven Of Nine featured front and center. I was intrigued; I have enjoyed David’s Star Trek novels in the past, especially . Thanks to TrekWeb, we now have a synopsis for Before Dishonor:

To the disbelief of Starfleet Command, and especially of Admiral Janeway, the Borg were not vanquished when the USS Voyager destroyed their transwarp conduits. A disabled Borg cube seems to hold the answers to why the Borg are now striking out and killing, without troubling to assimilate their prey. Admiral Janeway, Seven of Nine and a team of Federation scientists know they don’t have much time to stop the threat. Meanwhile Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise, who barely defeated the Borg who were trapped in Federation space, turn to Ambassador Spock for help. Can they discover what lies behind these strange and chilling developments before the Borg can make their triumphant return?

The Borg, Spock, and Captain Picard? Sounds pretty interesting to me. Although Voyager did everything seemingly possible to neuter The Borg and ruin Star Trek, I do have some faith in David being able to put together a compelling novel.

Weekend Reading

  • Voyages Of Imagination is a cool site that tracks new Star Trek books. I really enjoyed the Deep Space Nine relaunch novels (and honestly the Voyager ones weren’t even that bad) so I am excited there is a site tracking them like this. That Next Generation book with Seven of Nine on the cover (written by Peter David no less!? Awesome!) looks pretty intriguing.

  • Conversational Reading did not have a column today, but they did have a great series of links.

  • My old friend Dan interviewed Donna from the early eighties New York hardcore band No Thanks over at his blog.
